Daughter fails maths exam, dad gets jail
Ohio father gets 180 days even though daughter was living with her mother
OHIO — A father who had been ordered by a judge to keep a close eye on his daughter's education has been jailed for six months after she failed a mathematics examination.
Brian Gegner, of Fairfield, Ohio, was sentenced to 180 days in prison for "contributing to the delinquency of a minor".
His daughter, Brittany, now 18, had a history of school truancy and a judge warned her father to make sure she passed her General Educational Development (GED) tests.
Her family said that she passed four of the five parts, except for maths, which she has failed several times.
The judge's ruling seemed particularly harsh to Gegner's family because, even though he had sole custody of his daughter, she was living with her mother at the time.
"It was my wrongdoing, not his. He shouldn't have to go to jail for something I did," said Brittany, who has an 18-month-old daughter. She described the ruling as "ridiculously wrong".
Gegner is appealing and Brittany has promised to retake her tests. The judge has said that if she passes, Gegner could be freed early. Court officials said that the severity of punishment was rare and reserved for extreme cases where court orders were not met.
Gegner's wife, Stephanie, said that the couple feared that he would lose his job. She said they tried to keep his daughter in school. "You'd take her to school and she'd go out the other door."copied from:
